Reception (FS2)

FS2 or Reception is a crucial year in the British System as it is here that children really start to apply their Literacy and Numeracy skills in practical and written ways.
During their FS2 or Reception year, your child will learn through a continuous provision – a rich and play based environment that lends itself to building on skills taught and enables them to make meaningful relationships with their peers whilst exploring, making links and discovering. It is about fostering important pre writing and numeracy skills through fine and gross motor development and a variety of opportunities to gain independence and confidence in all areas.

What children should know when they start Reception

Starting Reception is a key milestone in your child’s early education journey. Naturally, many parents wonder what their child should know before they begin. The good news is that Reception (FS2) is designed to support children as they grow in confidence, independence, and early learning — they’re not expected to know everything on day one. Still, a few key skills can help your child settle in more easily.

Social and emotional readiness is just as important as early academic knowledge. Children should be able to separate from a parent or carer with some reassurance, follow simple instructions, and begin to work and play with other children. Skills like sharing, taking turns, and expressing needs using words help children feel more secure in a classroom setting.

Building independence also makes a big difference. It’s helpful if your child can go to the toilet by themselves, wash their hands properly, and manage their coat, shoes, and lunchbox without too much support. These everyday routines build confidence and help them feel capable in a new environment

Academically, Reception is about laying foundations — not having everything mastered. Recognising their name, enjoying books, showing curiosity, and being able to concentrate for short periods are great starting points. Most importantly, Reception is where a love of learning begins, and every child will progress at their own pace with the right support.

What can you do to get prepared?

Before you enroll your child at a British School, they will, most likely, require an initial assessment in order for the school to find out a little more about them. Below you will find the resources YOU need to prepare your child for this meeting.

What we offer is an assessment guideline – this gives you a sneak peek or preview about what your child may encounter when they go in for their first meeting.

Can you imagine how your child will feel going into a brand-new environment, with a brand-new teacher? It may be quite overwhelming so let us help you to ease anxiety.

The ‘paper’ is a template of what might be asked of your child and indicates what the assessor may be looking for. This may look different in every school but the information teachers are looking for will remain the same.
