Nursery (FS1)
FS1 or Nursery is the very foundation of your child’s learning journey and entails all the prerequisite skills for a successful career in a British Curriculum. Let us help you prepare your child for their first meeting with their new setting.
What children should know when they start Nursery School

Starting nursery is a big step for little ones and a special moment for families. Naturally, many parents wonder what their child should know before they begin. The reassuring news is that nursery is all about helping young children grow, explore, and learn at their own pace. That said, a few early skills can help your child feel more comfortable and confident.
At this stage, social and emotional development is key. Children benefit from being able to separate from a parent or carer for short periods, follow simple routines, and begin to engage in play near or with other children. Learning to share toys, take turns, and express basic needs through words or gestures is a great foundation.
When it comes to independence, young children aren’t expected to do everything on their own — but small steps go a long way. It’s helpful if they can try to feed themselves, begin toilet training (or tell an adult if they need a nappy change), and start recognising their own belongings like their coat or bag.
Nursery is a time of discovery, not pressure. There’s no need for formal learning — instead, being curious, enjoying songs and stories, and exploring through play are what matter most. With gentle encouragement and a nurturing environment, your child will gain the confidence to thrive in their own time.
What can you do to get prepared?
Before you enroll your child at a British School, they will, most likely, require an initial assessment in order for the school to find out a little more about them. Here you will find the resources YOU need to prepare your child for this meeting.
What we offer is an assessment guideline – this gives you a sneak peek or preview about what your child may encounter when they go in for their first meeting.
Can you imagine how your child will feel going into a brand-new environment, with a brand-new teacher? It may be quite overwhelming so let us help you to ease anxiety.
The ‘paper’ is a template of what might be asked of your child and indicates what the assessor may be looking for. This may look different in every school but the information teachers are looking for will remain the same.
